Hardware: BrainPOP is intended to be used in the classroom so that teachers can differentiate their instruction to meet the needs of their students, as well as to increase student achievement and provide opportunities for students to be engaged in the lessons. BrainPOP can be used for individual practice or review or for whole group.
Every classroom currently has a teacher computer that is equipped with both an LCD Projector, along with an interactive white board, whether it be an interwrite board or a mimio board, which would allow for BrainPOP to be used for whole group instruction. In addition each classroom has at least two student computers that are available more for individual use. In addition to the technology that is available in the classroom there are also two computer labs available for whole class activities. Due to the fact that BrainPOP is a computer website, according to BrainPOP.com, it is fully compatible with interactive whiteboards, learner response systems, projectors, Macs, and PCs. No downloading, installation, or special hardware is required. This means that there would be no additional cost for the district other than the subscription fee for BrainPOP itself.
Software: In order to successfully use BrainPOP.com there is no special software required. A strong internet connection is needed for successful use of BrainPOP. The only software requirement that may be necessary for using BrainPOP, is Elluminate. Elluminate is only necessary when participating in a webinar, which is used for professional development purposes. Elluminate is a software program that will allow you to participate in virtual meetings with teachers from all over the world as well as members of BrainPOP's professional development team. Elluminate is a free resource.
Existing Hardware/Software Needed Updates: One of the biggest features or resources that BrainPOP offers is their short video clips. It is necessary that every computer has working speakers so that the videos can be viewed. All teacher computers currently have speakers, however some may need updating so that the video can be heard even in the back of the classroom. Along with the updating of speakers on teacher computers, it is also necessary to have headsets for each computer in both the computer labs, as well as a minimum of two headsets for the two student computers in each classroom. Below is the cost of speakers for teacher computers as well as headsets for all student computers and computer labs.
